Artwork by KAREN KILIMNIK

Karen Kilimnik emerged in the early '90s as part of a group of "scatter" artists, who crafted punky, deconstructed installations. Taking her own cues from ballet, childhood, romantic painting, pop music, celebrity icons, witchcraft, time-travel, and practically anything else that she comes across, she merges painting, drawing, photography, and assemblage within her work. One of Kilimnik's most ambituous projects, The Red Room, was created as a reaction against the minimalist style of displaying art in galleries. The bright red walls of the installation resemble a 19th-century salon, replete with small paintings of seascapes.
