  SPECIAL FEATURE
LES Gallery Scene

Long home to a mélange of cultural attractions — burlesque clubs, anarchist squats, and Jewish delis — New York's Lower East Side is currently mesmerizing the art world. The neighborhood, with its friendly, DIY ethos, has recently birthed a host of new galleries, while more established galleries have also caught the LES bug and are setting up satellite spaces there. - by Sarah Kessler

  ART
Mike Hoffman: Suntasm
when: Now through Tue Nov 13 (Tue-Sat 11am-7pm)
where: Harold Golen Gallery (2921 NW 6th Ave, 305.576.1880) map
price: FREE
links: Event Info
Given his prolific background in comics, Mike Hoffman's gallery-oriented paintings (a new phase of his career the artist refers to as "erotic futurism") make perfect aesthetic sense with their buxom, exotic, and savagely empowered women on ethereal, color-soaked backgrounds. Inspired by American advertisements and fantasy images of the '60s, Hoffman fiercely wields the force of the female figure in sensuous, almost mystical depictions. A selection of his paintings is currently on view at Harold Golen Gallery, Miami's hippest new lowbrow space. - Omar Sommereyns

  MUSIC
Voodoo Glow Skulls
when: Tue Oct 23 (7pm)
where: Studio A (60 NE 11th St, 305.358.7625) map
price: $12
links: Event Info
Voodoo Glow Skulls are as relentless and unyielding now as they were in 1988, back when they were still jamming in the Casillas brothers' bedroom in suburban Riverside, California. Along the way, there have been tours upon tours (Warped and otherwise), records upon records (Southern California Street Music is the latest), and a bone-crunching allegiance to their musical tribe's whallop and wail. We're talking hardcore Chicano ska — it's like sandblasting your eardrums, but with more saxophones. - John Hood

  MUSIC: DJ
DJ QBert
when: Wed Oct 24 (11pm)
where: Studio A (60 NE 11th St, 305.358.7625) map
price: $15
links: Event Info
Making a a mighty name for himself as a member of the American/Filipino DJ crew Invisibl Skratch Piklz — perhaps the first-ever DJ "band," known for creating actual songs by layering bass, drum, and keyboard samples atop one another for a full musical assault — QBert is nothing less than a demigod in the hip-hop DJ world. He's an especially prolific one at that, having scored films and video games, hosted a TV show, and released his own albums. It's rare to see him flying solo, and it'll be interesting to see who shows up to catch his turntable pyrotechnics. - Jason Jeffers

  FILM
Nothing but the Truth
when: Wed Oct 24 (8pm)
where: Colony Theater (1040 Lincoln Rd, 305.674.1040) map
price: FREE / RSVP required
links: Event Info
Everyone knows there's one rule to making a good skate, surf, or porno flick: don't bother with a story — just show us the goods. Which is why it's a little baffling that Nike's first attempt at a skate film tosses in some pseudo-plot about the team's attempt to film a horror movie or some such. Not to worry, there's still plenty of hot action from the likes of Paul Rodriguez, Reese Forbes, Stefan Janoski, Chet Childress, and the rest of the Nike SB riders. - Brett O'Bourke

  PERFORMING ARTS: Dance
The Bugchasers
when: Thur Oct 25 - Sat Oct 27 (8pm)
where: Carnival Center for the Performing Arts (1300 Biscayne Blvd, 305.949.6722) map
price: $25
links: Event Info
In the parlance of our times, "bugchasers" are gay men who actively seek to become HIV positive, eroticizing risk and attempting to trade the shared bond of a communicable disease for real love. Performed in the intimate surroundings of the Carnival's Studio Theater, director/choreographer Octavio Campos' dance/theatre piece extends the metaphor to include others who would use illness as a fashion statement: self-medicators, plastic-surgery addicts, and all those who would destroy their soul in exchange for fleeting fantasy. - Brett O'Bourke

  ART
Ladies and Gentlemen...
when: Now through Sat Nov 10 (Tue-Fri 11am-5pm / Sat 12-4pm)
where: Sacco Gallery (6444 Biscayne Blvd, 305.754.2727) map
price: FREE
links: Event Info
Situated among the Biscayne Boulevard construction mayhem of the dubiously dubbed Upper East Side neighborhood, the new Sacco Gallery, with its 3,000 square feet of spankin'-new space, is surfacing as a compelling contender within the Miami art scene. This opening show compiles a variety of engaging works by both emerging and mid-career European and American artists. Standouts include David Estes' graphite drawings of floating figures surrounded by negative space; Sarah Trigg's Tap the Monsoon acrylic; and Jane Morren's enchanting oil pieces. - Omar Sommereyns

Talking Heads
when: Opens Fri Oct 26 (6-10pm)
where: Girls' Club (117 NE 2nd St) map
price: FREE
links: Event Info
Founded by local artist Francie Bishop Good and her husband David Horvitz, the new Girls' Club up in Fort Lauderdale focuses on contemporary art's female contributors, with well-curated shows culled from the couple's extensive collection of paintings, drawings, and photography from the 1960s to the present. The inaugural show, Talking Heads, features artists working across disciplines in portraiture, from Naomi Fisher's blood-red inks on vellum and Lorna Simpson's photo series to a caricature-esque drawing by Alice Neel. An interactive live-radio project entitled Talking Head Transmitters by Eugenia Vargas and Odalis Valdivieso rounds out the show. - Omar Sommereyns

The Independents
when: Fri Oct 26 (9pm)
where: Churchill's (5501 NE 2nd Ave, 305.757.1807) map
price: $10

Howling straight out of South Carolina and toting trumpets laced with terror, the Independents have long made a name for themselves with their horror-styled ska. Supported by goth and punk DJs, this Friday-night punky-reggae party at Churchill's is sure to draw a crowd amped (and attired) for the coming Halloween. - Benton Galgay

Hot on the heels of two recent sneaker shows — the Adidas/LEBO collaboration and the Miami stop on the Sneaker Pimps tour — Vans has commissioned a bunch of local and national artists to deck out a series of their own kicks. Presented by the Culture Kings shop and I Am Your Villain events, the launch takes place at Antikulture Gallery, a dope, lowbrow space in Wynwood, and features the shoe-decorating talents of Ron English, Mike Giant, Francesco LoCastro, Tatiana Suarez, Hest, and Typoe, to name a few. Meanwhile, DJ Keen One keeps things fresh with an eclectic, old-skool mix on the ones and twos. - Omar Sommereyns

when: Sat Oct 27 (8pm)

price: $23

Known for their writing and acting roles in everything from the critically acclaimed but short-lived Comedy Central show Stella to VH1's I Love the '70s, comedians Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter deliver their irony-soaked take on upper-middle-class life with pitch-perfect subtlety. Their show tonight is well worth the drive up to West Palm Beach. - Benton Galgay

  PERFORMING ARTS: Comedy
Sarah Silverman
when: Sun Oct 28 (8pm)
where: Jackie Gleason Theater (1700 Washington Ave, 305.673.7300) map
price: $41.50 - $67.50
links: Event Info
This has been Sarah Silverman's big year, from garnering some press/controversy hosting MTV's VMAs to entering the second season of her show on Comedy Central. Not that she's neglecting her standup roots: tonight, Silverman mixes racially insensitive innuendo and subversive nerd humor with crude punch lines, getting away with every smirk. - Benton Galgay

  FILM: Documentary
Comandante (2004)
when: Sun Oct 28 (8:30pm)
where: Miami Beach Cinematheque (512 Española Way, 305.673.4567) map
price: $10
links: Event Info
No one ever believed Oliver Stone's rambling chats with Fidel Castro would be shown in America outside of Sundance, let alone in South Florida, but the good folks at Miami Beach Cinematheque don't kowtow to bogeymen, no matter what side of the Florida Straits they come from. Neither, apparently, does Stone, who still hasn't secured official US distribution for Comandante after three years. Whether or not you think Stone is all about provocation and Castro nothing more than propaganda — the fact is, both should be allowed to speak. Is anybody listening? - John Hood

M.I.A. w/ the Cool Kids
when: Mon Oct 29 (8pm)
where: Studio A (60 NE 11th St, 305.358.7625) map
price: $27

Politically charged Sri Lankan/British mic jockey M.I.A. has been traveling a lot recently — whether she's liked it or not. After the mega-success of her 2005 debut, Arular, she found herself encountering visa issues that kept her out of the US. Thankfully, the resulting whirlwind trip around the rest of the globe inspired Kala, her grimy, worldly blitzkrieg of a sophomore album, which brings M.I.A. back to the MIA tonight. - Jason Jeffers

  PERFORMING ARTS: Theatre
Pablo Cano: Viva Vaudeville
when: Now through Dec 29 (schedule)
where: Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (770 NE 125th St, 305.893.6211) map
price: FREE
links: Event Info
A Dadaist sensibility and a refined knowledge of bricolage inform Pablo Cano's inventive, found-object marionettes. For his new production — the tenth commissioned by MOCA — Cano resurrects the golden age of vaudeville. A velvet-curtained stage sets the scene for Cano's red devil made from a guitar, Chinese musicians with coffee-pot bodies, and a tightrope-walking butterfly built out of discarded plastic trays. The performance unwinds to a soundtrack of 1920s American pop tunes and two original pieces interpreted by a live band. - Omar Sommereyns

  ART
Agitated Images: John Heartfield & German Photomontage, 1920-1938
when: Now through Sun Feb 10 (Sat-Tue: 12-6pm / Thur & Fri: 12-9pm)
where: Wolfsonian-FIU Museum (1001 Washington Ave, 305.531.1001) map
price: $7
links: Event Info
An iconoclast ahead of his time, Berlin Dadaist John Heartfield (born Helmut Herzfeld) helped revolutionize modern photomontage, subversively using the medium to denounce the fascist regime's pernicious nature. Surveying his work between 1920 and 1938, Agitated Images displays Heartfield's book-cover designs, posters, and biting work for Die Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung (The Workers' Illustrated Magazine), as well as a selection of 19th-century satirical illustrations that inspired the artist, magazine articles, and press photos to provide context for the work. Consider him an agitprop artist on one end, but ultimately Heartfield was an arresting-image-maker who cared most about disseminating truth and justice. - Omar Sommereyns
