Your cultural event guide
Here's a snapshot of our favorite things to do in Miami this week. |
|
|
| |
Getting around Miami is starting to be a chore. Our public transportation is a joke, and gas — well, you know. Your best bet is to buy a bicycle, but alas, even that is problematic. Miami lacks bike lanes, and local motorists don't have the respect for cyclists found in cities such as New York and San Francisco. Thankfully, there are people out there doing something about it: two weeks ago, local activist coalition Emerge Miami celebrated its continued bike-advocacy efforts with a two-year anniversary blowout for the monthly Critical Mass bike ride — a party which was attended by none other than Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. Seems he and his newly formed Bike Action Committee are researching ways to make the city more bike friendly; Emerge Miami has responded by posting a bicycle-use survey online. Offer your input, and maybe we'll see a few more bike lanes popping up around here in the not-too-distant future.

With tickets going for $1,500 and shows selling out within hours, it's unlikely that many of us will have the privilege of attending a night at the opera at Milan's La Scala. Thank goodness for Cinema Paradiso, which gives us the chance to see the legendary house's production of Aida on film. Giuseppe Verdi's tragic opera takes place in ancient Egypt and centers on a man torn between his love for a woman and his duty to his country. The run was a huge hit, but became infamous when, on opening night, a booing crowd caused tenor Roberto Alagna to storm off the stage, leaving his understudy to finish the first act in jeans.

Flamenco in the Sun takes a break from the stage with a double bill of movies that capture the flamenco spirit. First up is Carmen Amaya: La Reina del Embrujo Gitano, a three-part documentary about the temperamental dancer who broke hearts and box-office records, and twice danced at the White House. Part one is made up of three short films, recorded in the '40s, featuring rarely seen footage of the diva in action; parts two and three are made up of silver-screen clips and a photo montage, respectively. The second film, Carmen, is a flamenco-fied version of Georges Bizet's classic opera.

Beloved throughout the world as a symbol of enlightenment and peace, the Dalai Lama has achieved significant acclaim as a world leader. In 1999, seeking to address global issues, His Holiness invited 40 innovative Western thinkers to a meeting of the minds. Unfortunately, the meeting devolved into a (perhaps) inevitable butting of heads. The juxtaposition of the sage Dalai Lama with Western egos run amok presents a fascinating, thought-provoking look (particularly in the face of so much professed compassion) at human dynamics and their aftermath.

Flobots' "Handlebars" is one of the most unlikely hits in recent years. The tune morphs from a gentle acoustic rap-along about human ingenuity into a turbulent, distortion-tinged testament to the destructive power that mankind now wields. The song's swift takeover of modern-rock radio has resulted in newfound acclaim and demand for the Colorado band, which will be one of the main acts at Seattle's Bumbershoot music festival later this year. Tonight, Flobots warm up for the big gig and make some new fans in South Florida. Backpack-rap maven Busdriver lends support.

Pépé may be from Marseilles, but now he's on the lam in the Algiers Casbah, and his hometown may as well not even exist. The thing is, when you're a criminal, crime has a way of catching up with you, no matter where you are; so do the cops, especially when you go out of your way to save a dame. Julien Duvivier's pre-war classic, equal parts gritty realism and film noir, follows the French gangster through the strange terrain of colonial Algeria and all the way to his self-inflicted demise.

If you're one of those music nerds that detests all the razzle and dazzle of the South Beach super-clubs and the posturing that runs rampant at various downtown party enclaves, look no further than APT 423 at Love Hate. Once stationed in Abraxas Lounge as APT 407, this newly renamed weekly gathering is a mecca for those more interested in music than in fashion and gossip. From indie rock to Britpop to disco, DJ Ray Milian and cohorts deliver solid sets that keep this unique shindig jumping until the early hours.

Elsa Carolina Munoz and Melissa Ruffino join forces to illustrate their Inherent Connection at ArtCenter's Lincoln Road gallery. Ruffino's colorful, chaotic paintings experiment with glazing and sanding techniques, while Munoz's gorgeous, studied photographs explore light and movement. The works, hung in pairs throughout the space, were inspired by the "call and response method," with which each piece was created in response to a work by the other artist. The collaboration sparks a dialogue that illustrates the uncanny similarities in the artists' subject matter, despite their divergent mediums.

The unofficial dubstep duo of Skream & Hatcha is about as old as the genre itself. Considered pioneers in the style, the South London natives met at Croydon's legendary Big Apple Records nearly a decade ago, and the rest is history. Skream — who taught himself how to mix on turntables in his bedroom — brings his unique variety of bass-heavy electronica, while Hatcha — who is also a well-respected solo DJ — makes sure that the twosome's minimalist dubs have the beats to get recognition in the club.

If summertime pop-rap is leaving you itching for the real thing, look no further than the hip-hop heroics on display at Rock the Bells. The festival brings together more than a decade of heavy hitters, including A Tribe Called Quest, Raekwon & Ghostface, Nas, De La Soul, and the reunited Pharcyde. But the newbies are good bets, too: Wale's Seinfeldian Mixtape About Nothing seems like a simple lark, but it marks the emergence of Washington, DC's only A-list MC. And for backpack rap sans self-righteousness, catch former Def Jukie Murs and the ever-revolutionary Immortal Technique.

Atlanta's Le Castle Vania has an impressive ear for juxtaposition. His sets meld fresh electro beats with indie-rock staples and have a tendency to attract baby-faced party hounds looking for a place to thrash about into the wee hours. From massive shows in Mexico City and LA to his own hometown rager called Fuck Yesss, Le Castle Vania has earned a live following that has catapulted him from anonymous Internet DJ to internationally recognized spot rocker. Though Laundry Bar doesn't really cater to the scenester set, don't be surprised to find a room full of skinny jeans, neon t-shirts, and angular 'dos.

Although his career is divided sharply between the sugary boy-band confections of the '80s and the adult-contemporary fare of the '90s, there's no denying that ex-Wham member George Michael churns out captivating pop. Touring the US for the first time in 17 years, Michael hints that the affair is a best-of gig, but expect some new tunes from his second greatest-hits album, TwentyFive. File this one under "guilty pleasures," but if a recent television performance is any indication, Michael still puts on a seriously good show. You may be pleasantly surprised "before you go go."

When Depeche Mode 101 was filmed in 1988, the term "reality TV" had yet to invade the cultural lexicon. The documentary chronicles Depeche Mode's tour for Music for the Masses and presaged the reality genre by having fans follow the group on the road while cameras kept a close watch. The result is a doc filled with conflict and emotion that goes beyond the musicians onstage. The finale — Depeche Mode's sold-out Rose Bowl show — keeps the balance with footage of the group playing its hits.

The University of Miami's Wynwood Project Space lights up with Barry Sparkman's Hypnea, the Miami-based artist's latest solo effort. Sparkman shows off his Renaissance-man side by employing a variety of techniques — block printing, silk screening, lithography, etching, and monotypes. The artist, who is currently studying at UM for his second MFA, begins with source imagery of the Hypnea plant, then layers various media over it to create abstract, psychedelic landscapes that vibrate with an exuberant array of colors. Dense foliage patterns are undone by abstract bursts, transforming the pieces from still lifes into fresh, happy chaos.

The Americas Collection closes out the summer season with a glorious array of works on paper. Featuring Iberian and Latin American artists, many of whom are Miami-based, The Beauty of Paper is a journey through a variety of techniques — printmaking, painting, and drawing are just the beginning. From vibrant to subtle, figurative to abstract, this consistently solid group exhibition covers all the bases when it comes to making something extraordinary from this common material. Pulling miracles out of the mundane are Cundo Bermúdez, Pedro Ruíz, and Giancarlo Puppo.
