Your cultural event guide
Here's a snapshot of our favorite things to do in Miami this week. |

Thursday night, MOCA hosts an epic battle of the bands as part of the ongoing event series surrounding its Sympathy for the Devil exhibit, which looks at the ever-present relationship between art and rock 'n roll in the years since 1967. The band battle — as well as the lectures, workshops, films, and other excellent ancillary events supporting Sympathy — not only adds layers of meaning and context to the exhibition (e.g. how will these bands art-ify their rock?) but engages the community, making the drive up to 125th Street painless for both the bands and the spectators.

Just about everyone has heard of the late musician and composer Frank Zappa, but as the years go by, fewer seem to know just what the heck he did. That's a shame, because from the '60s to the '90s, Zappa was responsible for some of the most confounding and brilliant avant-garde rock 'n roll around. His eldest son, Dweezil — an accomplished, out-there musician in his own right — keeps his father's legend alive with Zappa Plays Zappa, a loose coalition of musicians who tour the world playing the music of Dweezil's progressive papa. For the curious, tonight's concert is Zappa 101.

Mainstream hip-hop invaded South Beach long ago, leaving heads looking for surprising hooks and obscure samples in the lurch. Takeout Tuesday, a staple among breakdancers and aspiring lyricists, is one of the few parties still attracting the hard-knock crowd on a weekly basis. Tonight, Brooklyn's DJ Elle — known for being promotress Roxy Cottontail's right-hand woman — pops in to drop some mean tracks along with DJane and Madame Turk, making for a ladies' night with a little bite.

For three summers now, hair-metal icons Poison have toured the country to the delight of their old fans. The group has had fistfights both onstage and off. But unlike many fellow '80s bands, Poison never officially broke up, so we can't really call these affairs reunion tours. These are raunchy, boozy, nostalgia-laden sing-alongs that recall a simpler time, when both guys and gals wore eyeliner and stretch pants. Filling out the throwback lineup are Reagan-era rockers Dokken and the audaciously named Sebastian Bach, former lead singer of Skid Row.

There may be no actual town of Requiem, Massachusetts (John Dufresne uses his native Worcester as a template), but the place evoked in this dysfunctional-family saga is as tangible as the Mozart funeral marches to which the title alludes. And since sadistic nuns, gasoline baths, polygamy, and loony bins all play a part in the fake memoir, it's also just as dark. Fortunately, Dufresne's Johnny Boy finds humor in bleakness, looking back on the story of his life with the kind of grin that allows him to bear it all, despite the fact that his own mother doesn't know who he is.

For the next four days, the 7th Annual Perrier French Film Festival unspools a satisfying mélange of celluloid. This year's slate is stocked with characters who find themselves in comedic tangles, from the reunited foursome in The Hikers in St. Tropez, to the couple who flee in Passe-Passe, to the bumbling pop who tries to bond with his daughter in Daddy Cool. The pièce de résistance of the festival, though, is Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (1975) — even if the film's subject was born in Belgium.

With the assistance of indie hangspot Sweat Records, the Museum of Contemporary Art hosts an old-school musical throwdown. Tonight, five eager local bands, including Latin-rock hometown heroes Minimal and crunchy punk outfit the Hongs, take the stage to perform their best 20-minute sets. The group that impresses the judges the most wins a new Epiphone guitar, free rehearsal time at JamRock studios, and the opportunity to sell its merch at the MoCA gift shop. Filling out the bill are Old Wives Tale, Psycho Daisies, and Treasures.

If there's one thing local trio Call it Radar do well, it's rock a stage. Constant touring and multiple festival slots — including one at 2008's SXSW — have paid off, and tonight Tom Gorrio, Arik Dayan, and Tony Aguirre trot out their polished live act at the Vagabond. Intricate guitar lines twine around melodic vocals and build into jam-out climaxes that are augmented with bits of trumpet and hand claps. Meanwhile, dynamic shifts in volume and tempo add unexpected twists and turns to the group's emotional power pop.

Take a day off from the beach to celebrate with the unemployed losers, bowling pederasts, and testy nihilists of the Coen brothers' imagination, instead of those in your own family. In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges heads an inspiring ensemble cast (including Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, John Turturro, and, erm, Flea) as the CCR-loving, lackadaisical bowler Jeffrey "the Dude" Lebowski. Following a little mix-up with some "rug-pissers" seeking a much wealthier Lebowski, the Dude sets out to exact retribution, only to get sucked into a kidnapping scheme of Raymond Chandler proportions. Highly entertaining and immediately quotable, the flick has amassed an ardent following (fests are involved) to become a legit cult classic. Bring on the White Russians.

While we at Flavorpill may advocate non-violence, at night, we still dream of wading into the blood-soaked octagon and kicking some ass. Since we are small and frail, however, we instead marvel at Steve LaVallee and his USA Black Belt Champions, as they demonstrate how to sit on a man's head and tear his arm out of its socket. We wonder at their mad nunchuck skills and keep count of all 36 styles of their danger. They are so stong and agile; we can only pray that a little of that rubs off at this evening's demonstration, and that one day our enemies will tremble in our wake.

Freestyle may be a throwback sound for many people around the country, but in South Florida the style never really went away. Emerging out of urban Latin communities in Miami and New York during the early '80s, freestyle married big, clattering hip-hop drums with pulsing synthesizers and electronic bass. Rappers didn't take notice; instead, catchy nursery-rhyme melodies were laid over the tracks by singers who prized enthusiasm over vocal training. Tonight, some of the folks responsible for the genre's true anthems take the stage, including Stevie B. and Lisa Lisa.

Join Miami-based Jim Drain in the latest installment of MoCA's pioneering artist-workshop series. An internationally acclaimed artist whose work is currently on view in MoCA's Sympathy for the Devil exhibition, Drain emerged from Providence, Rhode Island's sadly defunct Fort Thunder art space in the late 1990s with his DayGlo-colored, vaguely talismanic sculptures and installations. On Sunday afternoon, Drain and curator Ruba Katrib screen and discuss several short films that illustrate the complex relationship between experimental music and contemporary art.

Despite being little more than a long-running (albeit completely rad) music video, Prince's semi-autobiographical tale of "The Kid"'s rise to stardom confirmed his reputation as a fashion-forward sex symbol and spawned a mega-hit soundtrack that consumed 1984's pop-culture universe. Purple Rain wasn't the beginning of Prince's career (the soundtrack was in fact his sixth album), and it certainly wasn't the end — but it's the moment when he lived up to his royal name and ruled the world in all his funky, kinky splendor.

Miami Art Museum's Shadows, Disappearances, and Illusions shows off a delightfully disorienting selection of contemporary optical art. Artists such as Martin Oppel and Regina Silveira contribute drawings, paintings, and installations that use complex geometric illusions to play perspective tricks. The viewer, thoroughly ensnared in each artist's visual trap, is forced to examine the world with new eyes. Also on view are commissioned installations from Miamians Tom Scicluna, Matt Schreiber, and Wendy Wischer.

Brazilian filmmaker Chico Teixeira's Alice's House is a soul-stirring snapshot of working-class São Paulo. Though the tale of Alice (a world-weary manicurist), her ailing mother, and her male-dominated household (including Vinicius Zinn as Alice's hustler son) could take place anywhere, Teixeira focuses on a series of emotional explosions — marital infidelity, sibling rivalry, and sexual awakening — that rocks the foundation of this family. Brazilian actress Carla Ribas makes her feature debut with an intensely raw and absorbing performance that, in a perfect world, would lead to an Oscar nod.
